What are Lice?

Lice Today, who gets lice? mostly children aged 3 to 11. How it spreads Head to head. What works

🪳 What Are Lice?

Lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp and feed on small amounts of blood.
They do not jump or fly — they crawl from head to head.

There are three types of lice that affect humans:

  • Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) — the most common type in schools

  • Body lice (Pediculus humanus corporis) — linked to poor hygiene

  • Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) — transmitted through close contact in adults

✅ Good to know:

Head lice are not dangerous, don’t spread disease, and aren’t a sign of poor hygiene.

📈 Who Gets Lice?

Anyone can get lice — but it’s most common in:

  • Children ages 3–11
  • Families with multiple kids.
  • Teachers, camp counselors, daycare workers.

Lice are most easily spread through:

  • Head-to-head contact.
  • Shared hats, helmets, brushes, or bedding.

  • Lice can survive in clean hair just as well as dirty hair

  • Many school boards no longer send kids home for lice, so early prevention is key
